The Hobbit is a movie collection is made up of a number of separate films that combine to tell the story of classic The Hobbit novel written in 1937 by J. R. R. Tolkien. All three movies are directed by Peter Jackson who worked on the Lord of the Rings film trilogy that was completed previously.

The titles & dates of the three films that make up the hobbit trilogy are as follows:  An Unexpected Journey (2012); The Desolation of Smaug (2013); and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014);

The story of the Hobbit plays out in the setting of Middle-earth over half a century before the story of the Lord of the Rings. The main character Bilbo Baggins is encouraged to embark on what is to become an epic journey along with a collection of dwarves by the wizard called Gandalf the Grey.  

Bilbo leans about the treasure during songs sung at a house party Gandalf tricks him into having that is attended by the dwarves. Gandalf preduces a map that shows a secret entrance to the mountain through which Bilbo agrees to enter in order to steel the treasure from under the nose of a dragons called Smaug.

As the party journey takes them through the black forest of Mirkwood it is here that they encounter the giant spiders from which Bilbo saves the dwarves. As they approach the Lonely Mountain they meet humans who see the group as those foretold about on their stories who slay the dragon named Smaug.

At the end of the story Bilbo returns home to the shire with his share of the treasure having successfully dealt with the dragon.
