A sword from the Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and Unfinished Tales, was forged by the High Elves of the hidden city of Gondolin. It belonged first to Turgon and was then taken by Gandalf after being discovered among the hoard of the three trolls in The Hobbit. Gandalf then carried it throughout his journeys with Bilbo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring. It was the companion of Orcrist, and likewise, glowed blue whenever orcs were close by. Glamdring was nicknamed 'Beater' by the Goblins of the Misty Mountains.
Tolkein discusses Gandalf's character in his essay on the Istari as being warm, friendly and high in spirit. He was the enemy of Sauron. Gandalf was mainly a happy character and kind to the young and simple, yet at times, could be sharp and to the point. He was not proud and did not seek power or praise. He mostly journeyed on foot, using his staff for support. He was known by men of the North, Gandalf the Elf of the Wand. They thought of him as Elven-kind as at times, he would work wonders among them but this was not true, he was not of Elven-kind. He did not want people to be in awe of him or take counsel from him out of fear. Gandalf the Grey was slain and sent back from death for a brief period and returned as Gandalf the White and more powerful than before.
